Metering and Exposure – Photography with Imre – Episode 6

www.learningdslrvideo.com These techniques I am about to explain to you are based on my observations on how my videos require more work to match that of what I see on the big screen in the move theater. 1. Set your camera to 24fps. To be honest this is probably provides the smallest benefit of all the items I am going to tell you about. Most people can not tell the difference from 24 to 30 fps, this happens more on a sub-conscience level. The main reason I shoot at 24fps is not the look, it is because it creates smaller file sizes for me to edit with. 2. Shoot with a shallow depth of field (large sensor) This can be done with DSLR with large sensors like the 5D T2i and the 60D. This I think is the item that provides the most benefit of all the items I have. Not every shoot has to be this way, but just watch and film or good TV show and you will see super shallow depth of field used over and over. 3. aspect ratio, this is the second most important. Normal people notice this right away when their TV is letter boxed once the movie starts. This is a dead giveaway that this is a film. 4. Shoot in 720p or higher, to match film you are going to need all the resolution you can get. However many will not notice that much difference between 720 and 1080. 5. Use a tripod, a monopod, use a rig on your shoulder, most important keep it steady unless shakiness adds to your story. 6.     Hmmm, are you referring to focal length? Usually that is measured in mm. A focal length is basically where a lens brings an image into focus. Longer focal length lenses (e.g. 300mm) have narrower fields of view and bring distant objects closer (telephoto lenses), whereas short focal length lenses like 12mm have wider field of views, hence wide angle lenses. Perhaps Google “focal length wiki” and see if that helps. Is that what you’re looking for?

    I believe you are referring to millimeters, a form of metric distance measurement, of which the abbreviation is “mm”.

    This is why a photographer needs to compensate (over or underexpose) a little to help the camera the exposure “correct”. Using a light meter (incident light) simply measures the “amount” of light available, therefore, there is no need to take into account what the reflective properties of the object are; in other words, the scene does not need to be interpreted. Try Googling “incident meter vs reflective” and you’ll find some good articles further explaining this.

    I’m glad you like my videos! The reason incident metering tends to be more accurate, is because no matter what your lens is pointing at, the camera will turn the scene into an “average” grey (the 18% gray I talked about). Therefore, it no longer matters what the colors of objects are or how reflective they are, the scene is simply turned gray; remember, cameras are dumb machines and they don’t really know what is in a scene so the conversion is basic.

    I dont understand how incident metering accurate than the TTL/reflective…. incident light light meter will not take info consideration the reflective properties of the object..as the incident light and the light hitting sensor can vary as per the properties of object…. i feel TTL should be accurate at it meters exactly the light hitting sensor… I could be wrong as i am no expert in photography.. .. but this judgement is as per my understanding of physics .. Thanks…. i like your videos!!

    Shoot at 24p or if you don’t have that option then , shoot at 30p or 60p/or 60i and on computer convert to 23.967 FPS, or 24p and then color grade your videos using VirtualDub google it and google freemakeconvert 😉 good luck all
    P.S make sure when color grading , remove noise, add contrast, put in greenish blue tone with a little warm red, and saturate medium

  28. For shallow depth of field you turn the f number (aperture) to smallest number it will go to. That will open up the eye in your lens and should then make things blurry around your subject. It’s called shallow depth because only a small area in your camera’s view will then be in focus. If you do the opposite and use a big f number (closing the aperture) then you’ll have a long depth of field and everything will be in focus. Shallow DOP looks better most of the time. Hope this helps.

  29. Hi, could you review some filters for film look, please? There’s tons of info to be found on camera settings, then there’s tons more about picture styles and colouring, but the bit I’m stuck on is when people say SHARPNESS is important, but when you look at movies, they’re actually quite soft, compared to documentaries and TV dramas. I’ve been looking at promist, fog and diffuser filters but there isn’t a lot of examples on youtube. Should movies be sharp, or soft? Thanks for any help.

    The best way to achieve film look is shooting on film… If film could develop itself so you can see the instant results I bet the demand on film cameras would rise again (BTW I don’t mean instant picture cameras)

    You are right. Most people starting out get carried away with a depth of field that is far too shallow. Look at films by Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Paul Thomas Anderson, Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, they are shallow, but not overwhelmingly shallow in their depth of field.
