froknowsphoto.com So much about flash photography is creating a scene – determining which elements of your frame you want to have exposed and how you want the exposure to be balanced. in this video, I demonstrate balancing the background’s ambient exposure to reveal details pertinent to creating the right scene for an environmental portrait, then dialing in light for my subject using one off-camera flash. This is just an example of balancing ambient light with your flash. You can go for other creative effects but either blowing out the background or darkening it – depending on what look you’re going for. This time, I wanted to expose for the details outside of the window before I brought in flash and even got lucky with a nice reflection of my subject in the window while avoiding the reflection of the flash and umbrella. Can it do 360×180 panos?
This is a very good tutorial. The biggest reason to shoot horizontal panos with the camera vertical (and vice versa) is to keep the resolution as high as possible. At least that’s why I do it.
I usually shoot panoramas by hand and I have great results. Does it help that much to shoot on a tripod? I am sure I get a lot more distortion, but it is very hard to see.

how exaxctly does it work because does it understand or know how far your flashes are from your subject?
Adam, if you’re concerned with the flash reflection in the background of the ambient exposure, why not just take another shot without the flash, and then mask out the reflection with a layer mask. If you’re shooting in manual, there should be no noticeable difference in exposure.
Why use such a high ISO? Surely increasing the shutter from 1/250 to around 1/80 will allow you to use a lower speed rating while maintaining a correctly lit interior. The model isn’t moving around so motion blur isn’t going to be an issue. I know modern cameras handle noise well, but for 1250 on a commercial shoot is still pretty high. The noise from the blacks will be noticeable.
Sorry but the subject looks quite uncomfortable.. look at his left hand. .the way it is positioned, it just looks weird/unnatural and it ruins the shot. .I think you should have redone that shot with everything the same but the subject positioned a little better. if I was the client, I wouldnt accept this photo. My fav photo in the series is the one with his reflection in the Niko sign.
So this was with TTL on the flash? or full manual. im confused..wait can u even use ttl with poket wizards? i know ttl works with nikon CSL but with triggers its full manual right?

Adam, can you do more 1 flash photography? I’m getting a SB-700 really soon and it will probably be my only flash for a while, you know until I figure things out. But it would be help ful to learn a little just using one single speedlite.

@AdamLernerPhoto I want to do the same, but isn’t the white balance temps different from the natural/ambient lights and the strobs? Did you use any filters for the flash, or would you to balance the entire photos white balance?
He said the final one would simply be a great portrait, it wasn’t meant to be illustrative. It wasn’t selected by the client, anyway, so you needn’t worry!

if the background was distracting, i would slightly under expose it and lower my f stop (or shoot at f/5.6 zoomed all the way in to get the same effect) and fill the subject with the flash and maybe a reflector, that way you would have the “good” detail in the background and all the detail on the subject
