This is a good way to keep learning. Observe the settings your camera gives you in P mode and duplicate them in a more advance mode. With some practice, you will begin to understand the settings better. From here…..start to learn how to get a “creative” exposure. (Shallow depth of field, large depth of field, etc…) It’s a good learning tool.

If you’re wanting to adjust shutter speed, for the fast kid, why not just switch to Tv mode?

Most people new to photograhy will use (Auto)-(P-program)and will take some nice pictures and the only thing they might improve on is Composition over time,but in A-P mode what are they actually learning about photography if the DSLR is setting all the variables ?..hopefully this video might encourage some to learn to be creative and come off the auto modes!

@jwheeler91 Very smart idea. Most people start in P mode and get stuck there. I want to give those people an idea of how easy it is to move to AV, TV, or M. Learning by doing is the best way. A lot of people get stuck in a rut. I hope to help these people in some small way.
When I got my 60D was I supposed to start on P Av or Tv. I jumped straight in on M. Learning by doing…

Dave… I am in the exact same boat. Just got the 60D and coming from the Vixia it is a steep learning curve. However I know my persistence and seeing you do it has helped keep me focused on getting better quality videos. Thanks for posting all of your vids!

I think you’re right about the ‘hitting the ball’ analogy, I went to film school and learned everything about video, then discovered the T2i and fell in love. Now I’m learning almost from scratch. You can definitely apply some previous knowledge of filming video to shooting with DSLR’s but I feel you really have to figure out what works for you personally. Either way I believe it’s a good thing that people have to plan their shots, it’s a way to make sure they are doing it right.
