I tried these instructions and it worked great for me. But if the moving object is far…it doesn’t look like panning. Does anyone know how to do panning for objects moving far away ?

Even a compact camera with Shutter Priority mode can do panning.
You can set your focus to manual and focus on a point that the target will move through. Then you pan with the target and try to shoot at that point. Having a longer DOF can help with capturing the target in focus too.

I think it’s better to pre-focus the lens and predict where the subject is going because on entry level camera’s the auto focus don’t work that fast.

If you zoom in to 55mm, get closer to your subject (if you can, of course) then why not?
The 18-55 is a great lens! You just need to learn to master it. I still use it 90% of the times =]

well, something missing i guess. When you slow your shuter speed will need to compensate with and high aperture. Or you´ll get burned images 😀 think it was the only thing that missed in the movie of panning photos. Great explanation Mark, you movies are pretty awesome! keep them going!

Metering is different. On my canon I have 9 autofocus points.. They are in the shape of an oval and a point in the center of the oval. They appear when you press the shutter button halfway. If you select the manual mode.. you can actually select any of the 9 autofocus points and take a picture…. Not sure if the graphic would come out ok but this is how the autofocus points look like on my canon:

Compensition is a startingpoint for good and impactful photographs. I do not understand people who want to act superior based on their critique of a 3 min 24 sec video ment to help people. You could not even know that you were breaking the rules if you do not know the rules.
The photographer that goes against the rules make the best photos. If you don’t understand it you’re not a photographer.
There is another form of composition called common sense lol.

heres where it gets confusing to me. you can snap a shot, any shot typically and find any of those curves/diagonals. but still he takes great photos and most of mine look like blah.. what do you think?
