Hey, thanks for making tips videos for NEX 5N! Anyway, I’ve got one question about adapters: does your one sits stiffly in the 5N’s body? Mine moves just a lil bit right and left, which doesn’t get on my nerves in photo mode, but when it comes to filming – it’s pretty annoying especially when you move the focus ring. I was wondering if this problem exists in every adapter or I just get the less good one.

1080p = 1920 x 1080 pixels = about 2 mp … not all camera/lens combos will resolve the entire 2mp in video mode for various reasons. if video resolution is your primary criteria for choosing you next camera, then i dont think the 5N or most other DSLR camera will suit your needs.

I was astounded to hear you say that the resolution of the 5n in video mode is only 2 megapixels. Is this why most of the videos that I have watched that are taken with the 5n look a lot softer Except for the 1080p size they look like they were taken with a much cheaper camera. This fact alone takes the 5n off my list of potential future purchases. What about 1080p video taken with dslr’s like the Canon Rebel T2i. Are they much less is the than the maximum image resolution of 18mp?

Of course… but that doesn’t change the effective focal length. The camera still uses the full width of the sensor.
its around 1.57.. the sensor is APSc 3:2 natively (i.e. 1.5x crop) and it chops the top and bottom off to get the 16:9 of 1080p.. which works out to 1.57.. but, 1.6x is easy to do the math
The crop in Video-Mode is NOT 1.6x on the NEX ! It’s 1.6 on the a65, a77 (and maybe the new SLTs) because they are using electronic stabilisation. The NEX uses the OSS and therefor it won’t crop the image to make image stabilissation.
Hello, do you know “MagicSFXphoto” (just search on Google for it …)? On their website you will find a smart free video featuring how to create better photos. It helped Matt to shoot photos which have a jaw-dropping-effect when you look at them. It may help you too.

i already have an SLR so didnt want to get another one. so, if you want an SLR and be able to shoot video, then the a65. but. they both are both good, have manual controls and access to good lenses.. so, i think its just going to come down your technique and how much time you put into the video (editing, etc). although, the a65 has a mic input.
Do you have any thoughts as to which is better for video- the A65 or 5N?

THX for the fast reply. Hmm. I read in a few reviews, that there is no MIC connector. But I thought, that you maybe know of an adapter or anything else to connect one. But separate record is a good idea. The only problem: For “quick and dirty” shooting it´s a little bit laborious. Especially, when you have to mount the recorder to the NEX 5N for example (to be as mobile / flexible as possible).
Maybe the Alpha 57 would be a better choice for me.

nah, the 3 and 5 series has the proprietary connector, only the ecm-sst1 mic fits it. you could always go external and sync in post, you would get much better audio quality that way anyways. thanks for the comment
