Last week I spoke about how you can use FULL AUTO to learn how to shoot manually. This week I wanted to answer a few comments that were made on last weeks post. Some people were saying that its a bad idea to “chimp” or check the back of your camera often. I fully agree that chimping is bad if you are going to shoot a picture and look every time. Hi Mark, does the Quantum flash work with the Pocketwizard Flex, Mini and AC3? The Pocketwizard Plus II wouldn’t support TTL correct?

A book is cool!
Take for example the concept of the LCD-screen being like a light-meter, likening it to a test shot with a poloroid. What he says here is pure rubbish. Of course he’s not using a small gamut screen as a baseline comparison, he’s really just chimping, with which nothing is wrong. If this makes naive beginners run around claiming that they also use the screen as a light meter, then the damage has been done. Forget metering setting, exp. correction, exp. lock and all that factual stuff…
I won’t argue further. All I can say is that I have not seen Jared do what you’re saying he does. I won’t say he hasn’t.
Don’t believe me? Just stick with him, People like that will always fuck you over. If you make a technical shot he doesn’t understand, he’ll rip on you for lack of “feeling”. And when you make a stunning hipshot, he’ll dump you for pseudo-technical reasons.

That’s to bad that you do not get that. There are images that are “good” from and aesthetic point of view and from an technical one. Now, both disciplines can mix to become a very potent combination, but not when the one is used to excuse the other or when these fields are distorted wilfully like Polin does. His photo’s are not that hot and his grasp on the tech is downright amateurish. That leaves him only with the art of convincing people why mediocre shots are better then they are. to bad.
I don’t quite understand… don’t you have to know what counts as a good picture and be able to explain what you mean by “good picture” before you instruct others in how to take a good picture? Also, aren’t most of his videos about techniques? Isn’t that showing people how to take good pictures?

I disagree with that completely. What I find most damaging about these “instructional” video’s is not that he mixes jargon up, explains things badly or wrongly or even that he tries to uphold the old elite mystique. It’s that he shows how to randomly argue what a good picture is, instead of showing how to make one. It 10% image 90% arbitrary talk why it’s so good. That is bullshit artistry in it’s purest form I think.
I’ve seen a lot of Jared’s videos; he’s not particularly rigorous, but these videos are mostly for beginners so that’s okay. Much of the time, I just don’t agree with some of the tips. For example, I don’t like “chimping,” not even for the reasons Jared gives. I chimp for composition sometimes. I haven’t heard him say anything atrocious so far, though.

Pure bullshit. The camera in full manual still meters, a full auto shot is completely redundant if you can read the camera and especially READ THE F*#&$#NG LIGHT! You (hopefully) know how you are metering and you know what type of shot you want, slow exposure or fast. Only if you are unable to predict the camera’s output or you are insecure, then would you take a baseline, but only for yourself, because it has NOTHING to do with the final photo. Amateur.
I could sit and watch your videos all day. You have such an informative outlook on eveything DSLR which made me buy the Nikon D3000. Could I have a book please?
