HDR will be nice if they ever make displays that have a greater range, otherwise tone mapping just looks silly.
Photoshop sucks at HDR.. Photomatix FTW! Its funny that I barely do HDR anymore.. they just look fake sometimes.. but sometimes they can work out great.

yes you can, but not as much control since CS4 is the first (iirc) PS version with the HDR feature.
@drradon that’s because 99,99999999% of the people that create HDR image over do the tonemapping as Mark mentioned @8:50 with the halo when the radius was cranked way up.

I’ll never learn to love that HDR photography. These kinds of pictures are probably ok if they represent some holy religious movement or a Moonie poster!
The nightmare is complete when all cameras are being born with a decent build-in HDR merge function and that the majority of uploaded landscape photos will look like this in the future.

People HDR doesnt have to have that un-realistic look. there are options in photoshop or any other program that can make HDR pictures look realistic. It’s just that most people prefer having HDR look un-realistic to give a unique look.
the images are jpeg’s or raw?
Mark, I noticed that you were using the two (back and front) dials when you were bracketing. Weren’t you supposed to be modifying the shutter speed?

99,99999999% of the pictures HDR just looks terrible. 😉

thanks but Photomatix is not free AFAIK, while for example Luminance HDR is.
So I would like to know which free software would Mark use to make HDR images.

there’s graduated filters in lightroom, no need for ugly hdr
It’s definitely a taste thing, HDR very easily looks cartoon-y but the point of it is really to bring out details in the high and low range of an image. Even if it’s become sort of a ‘trend’ now. In my opinion it looks more realistic if you don’t crank up the saturation that high, which most people seem to do when they’re making HDR images.
