This is where a lens chart would come in handy as that would show the range that is in focus at a specific f-number and distance for your lens. But in general if you were shooting a group then there’s a potential that folks closer or farther away would be out of focus… but of course this depends on the size of the group and how far away your are. The DOF increases the farther away you get from your focus point; also look up hyperfocal distance which might help you.
What is the effect when shooting at at low F number but the subject is far away. Like shooting a group of people? What if we were forced to use a low F number to get a higher shutter speed will only some of the group be in focus?

There are a lot of tutorial videos out there, and a lot of people discussing the relation between aperture and depth of field. But this probably the best one, the most simple, most straight forward video I’ve seen. You make it very easy to understand, with less talking and more actual hands-on demonstrations.

Im seriously considering buying an E-3. I currently have an E-500, and feel that i’ve gone as far as I can with it. It’s a fantastic camera, but I feel its dated specs are limiting the kind of photos I want to be producing.
Im having a hard time deciding If I should go with the E-3, Im hearing mixed reviews all the time. Are there any downsides you’ve found with using it? I’ve only ever had Olympus cameras, and have several low end lenses. I’d kind of like to stay with them.

Ha! Sorry for the long response!
– Comfort and ease of use; since most photographers hold their cameras for hours on end, it’s important to feel comfortable with it, and it helps if the controls are laid out well.
Now there are many other factors, but I’d suggest visiting a local camera store, and I’d like to recommend staying away from big box electronic stores. Usually the staff at those places aren’t very knowledgeable about such equipment and just want to sell you anything expensive.
Really it’s a tough question you’ve asked, because there are quite a few choices, but in general here’s what I usually go by:
– Number of lenses available (Canon is generally considered the leader, followed by Nikon, then Olympus).
– Accessories available; I try to aim for a brand that has a fair number… I may not need some sort of accessory now (like flashes, cords, adaptors, etc), but I may in the future.

Since you’re in the UK, I’m not very familiar with what 300 Pounds can buy, but I’ve doubled the value to $600 CDN and for that much money here in Canada you can buy quite a few different models ranging from the Canon Rebel XS or perhaps XSI, Olympus E-420, E-520… maybe the E-620, Sony’s Alpha A230, and Nikon’s D3000.
I am so glad I found your videos-Thank you! I am thinking of buying a SLR camera-budget no more than £300 and could you help me which one is best.

Hi theduttch, the camera I used to shoot the video with in this episode is the Casio EX-F1.
The camera that you see me holding (of course not a video camera) is the Olympus E-3.

Yes, in this video I used my Casio EX-F1. However, I’ve recently switched to the Olympus E-P2 (episode 9 and up).

Thanks for the tips. How far does the reflectors and amount of light that hits the subject need to be for a good picture?
the comparison photos are doctored though. there’s a big difference in the ground and background bush colors – they’re darkened and have more of an hdr feel. this didn’t come from the bounce screen, it probably came from lightroom or some other type photoshop. you should show the raw photos compared next to each other.

I would go for the AV Setting and I guess the ISO needs to be 2000 Its just a brief guess.

It depends on what you mean by camera setting. If you mean mode, I always shoot in Manual. As for Shutter Speed, F-Stop, ISO, it all depends on your natural light and the effect you want to create.
what are some suggested camera settings for this kind of shooting?

Portraits are definitely one of the biggest subjects for reflectors but it can be used for many things. I’ve used them for macro photography, and other smaller subjects. You can only effectively use a reflector if it gives enough light for your subject size
