Another Polarizing Filter Bites The Dust…

In this video Karl shows us some tips and techniques for photographing flowing water. We have a look at how different shutter speeds affect the atmosphere of our shot and how a polarizing filter (which he loses!) works to increase the contrast by reducing surface reflections. Getting the right angle of view is important and as usual Karl finds himself knee deep in water to get the best shot!

    the filter affects on your D5100 are just produced by the software by changing contrast vigenetting saturation ect. these physical filters are very hard to replicate in software

    K, I’m a bit confused as I’m a starting photographer: I have a Nikon 51000 DSLR and it has its own “filter effects” which I assume does the same thing as these (at least some) filter lenses. Do you think if I want to go further into photography (professionally) I should get these filters? Like the “graduated filter”. ?

    It’s the amount of time that the shutter is left open to capture the exposure. This is balanced by the f-stop of the lens (f2.8, f3.2) which is how large the aperture is (and therefore how much light is let in to the exposure). The smaller the f-stop number, the wider the aperture and the more light let in. So, with a smaller aperture, more time is required to get the correct exposure. Longer exp time like this gives the water a silky look. Shorter exp. time will freeze the water movement.

    It’s easier than you think, and it’s f11. F11 is a small aperture and having such a small aperture can really effect the longer exposure and make it come out nice.

    How do you manage to handle 8 sec exposure during daytime @ f18 with just polarizing filter to reduce the incoming light ?
