Travis of Social Paintball gives us a tutorial on how to shoot paintball videos with Digital SLR cameras (DSLR). We use Canon for their extra shooting modes over Nikon. He’ll go over the Canon 5D Mark II and the 7D bodies, plus lenses. One of the challenges of using a DSLR is the manual focusing needed and the depth of field. Stay tuned for part 2. This is a nice clear video and a good lens to show whats actually happening. Could you do one on when to focus on infinity and also hyperfocal distance?

Awesome video. Any tips on focusing this way when your lens has no lines?

  4. DSLRCamera says:

Thanks CoolDudesJunk. I just had to make the video since it was so easy to understand with this lens. Glad you enjoyed it!

  5. CoolDudesJunk says:

One of the most solid tutorials on lenses I’ve seen. Thanks :)

  6. it’s amazing that with this purely manual lens, and all of the markings, how easily all of the main photography concepts can be explained.

thanks for posting this video. those markings give an immediate mental visualization on the f/stop and focus depth relationship.

These were old Long Tom Zoom lenses with the optics of the ‘Ass of a Bottle’… the modern Zooms have a two touch system rather than the Trombone lenses of old.. the ‘Prime Lenses’ [Fixed Focal Length’ should have these graduations still on same… it all depends what your into sports, landscape, or portrait,..sometimes you want serious depth of field.sometimes it’s the last thing you want…Hyperfocal depth of field is mainly for Landscape, where as sports tend to look for the opposite

  10. malachy1847 says:

They were good in their time but the New Lenses knock spots off them due to those number crunching computers thus making the a lot of the old problems a thing of the past,.. deviations.. like Pincushion and Barrel distortion… plus the super newgeneration lightgathering materials the new lenses are now within everyones reach… once you would have to take a mortgage to buy a good lens not so today……. …

Thanks for this video. This may be the single best video on photography that I’ve seen in the last year. It brought all these competing variables together for me in a short, easily understood video. Nicely done.

  12. I wish the newer lens are that detailed. Anyone know if I can pull up these scaling info in the newer Canon cameras?

  13. it’s a great tutorial, but it would be nice to show some actual pictures and their settings and alight meter.

  16. I didn’t understand the last comment – why might the subject look out of focus at 15′ through the viewfinder but then be in focus when the shot is taken?

  17. toad2039 says:

  18. Thanks for the Video. I am just glad that now all we have to do is click and get out f #’s.

From what I know, everything below 28 mm is wide angle, 28 to 50mm is standard and everything above is telephoto. To calculate optical zoom on a DSLR zoom lens (given it isn’t a prime or fixed focal length lens), simply do the ratio between the maximum focal length and the minimum one :) For example the 18-55 mm lens has a zoom ratiot of 55/18=3.05 x. Did that enlighten you?

  20. Nickamsweet says:

must admit that lens is very helpful with those guidelines!!

i am just starting myself and trying to get to grips with all these settings…

  21. DSLRCamera says:

Thank you. It took some time to understand this when I was starting (back in the 80’s). Then I got this lens and the light bulb went on.

    Had to share it.

  22. that was a good vid

  23. gogolusa says:

    Outstanding demonstration! Thank you.

  24. 123456iambelial says:

How do you covert the DSLR lenses zoom to optical zoom(ex. 5x optical zoom)?
What focal lengths are wide angle, standard and telephoto?
    Thanks

  32. WantedTom says:

Super great presentation of dslr cinematography!
Maybe the only problem is when you say “larger apertures are gonna give you a much greater DOF”
Maybe people can misunderstand that sentence.

  33. SocialPaintball says:

All the camers I showed you are eos..not sure I understand what ur asking. They all have the EOS designation infront of the model.

  34. SocialPaintball says:

Yes it works in video mode and helps alot when not on tripod.

  35. SocialPaintball says:

Fish eyes are nice but are only for close up shots or very wide shots. Not good for across the field shooting.

  36. SocialPaintball says:

Avoid it by not panning crazy fast.

  37. MarcusWolschon says:

What’s that constant noise in the background? Is there a fan running next to the microphone?

    Thanks Austin

  49. DrPracticleHat says:

I have the A55, the movie autofocus is really nice, it’s a lot slower than the normal focus, so it won’t jitter about as much compared to when it takes stills, but if you need to AF really quick then you can just switch it to manual.

also the A55 does 1920×1080 at 60fps, should be getting some wider lenses for this season NSPL.

  50. Pier2pie says:
