www.learningdslrvideo.com I am working on a training video in my studio and I want tweak the lighting and the look a bit more. Since picture styles can greatly effect the look of the lighting I wanted to try out the new Technicolor CineStyle picture style and compare it to the stock picture styles. I have been testing the CineStyle style a lot but I feel I still have a lot to learn with it, so I will be a more thorough video on it later.

Have you tried using the CC time blend effect in AE with forced ? I just recently did a timelapse for an ad and that dlivered a fairly smooth result.
If you are looking to smooth out your time lapse i have found some tricks in that you assemble the pictures with a duration of 1 frame each running 60 frames a second then exporting the time lapse as a video then importing your recently exported video and slowing it down to 30 fps or ever 15 because then your editing software will create frames in between the shots with frame blending. watch my recent time lapse video on my channel hope this helps!!!
If you are going to be in super bright snow environment you may want to double up on the NDs for your time lapses.

I shot 1 pic/2 sec on neutral picture style,custom white balance,1/13 shutter speed and 100 ISO.
I used intervalometer function of magic lantern as i dont own a remote yet.
Then i imported the image sequence in AE and exported as quick time movie from render Q.
Then i imported the footage to Sony Vegas ..did a bit of color grading and added titles and exported to Mp4 with Main Concept codec as per the settings from you blog.

Yes! I find Premiere Pro can’t playback my timelapses in realtime, but because it doesn’t think it needs to do any rendering, it won’t let me ‘pre-render’ the timelapse either. Its really annoying! Also, have you considered buying a variable ND filter? You’ll find it really useful for video as you can very quickly alter the brightness without swapping filters. You can also make them from two polarising filters.
stupid question, but you do know if you hit the enter key in after effects it does a quick render?
set your scratch disks folder to desktop and then you can delete when you’re done with your project

try making your timelapses in Quicktime Pro.

Fear not, Dave. I’ve just gotten into time lapses myself, and there’s a learning curve. I use CS3 Photoshop, it’s pretty painless for me. PM me if you want details on using it. After looking at your time lapse, I’m wondering what interval you had your camera shooting at? And what playback fps did you use?

Vegas rocks , never used premiere, i have it just never installed it and used it. I think it’s just choppy because there’s too much movement between the shots you need something more continuous where you can take a lot more sequential photos at one time. may not be able to do that well with the T2i, that may be something you need something more like the 7D or 5D for to make things turn out well for time lapse. most people do time lapse vids in video mode and just speed them up.

That was my first time lapse. Got seriously owned by the camera but I have since learnt more and have tweaked my methods. Did once last night (accidentally left my camera out all night! It’s fine!) and it looks a lot better. Try try try again!
Are picture styles like Marvel, and Technicolor CineStyle safe?

For the final comparison at 1:42 you mention “lets compare that to the Cinestyle, here is the Cinestyle with Saturation and Sharpness added” but the text just says contrast -4. What were the real settings for the Saturation and Sharpness? Very good video Dave. Shooting with Cinestyle is completely pointless if your just going to throw a LUT on as you’ve proven here that Landscape or even the Standard profile is better. I’ll make a video tutorial soon which will highlight this issue. Cheers!

Someone may have asked this question before, but have you ever tested for hot pixels? I did a 30 second shot of the stars and noticed hot pixels on my t2i. So I decided to test it with the lens cap on in a dark room to make sure there was no glare from any light and pow! More hot pixels. I’m thinking of trying to clean it but not sure that will work.
You are correct. Landscape lands better results even for color correcting.
If you want to correct then Try the Sharp 3, Contrast 2, Sat 0 or middle default, and Tone at 0 or default.

I don’t think cinestyle is good at all. Just look at what you did, you take the cinestyle to look like landscape with post LUT and sharpening… but as you do that, you’re losing a lot of color and definition that wasn’t recorded in the first place. So you have banding(8 bit minus first 16 bits) & artifacts(4:2:0!). I think it’s better to shoot neutral at most if color correcting (ie:blockbuster look).
I say all this cause I’m sooting a feature length cheap film and want to do it right.
I think this is a pretty good example why to use the Cinestyle. You can do everything in post and don’t have to mess around with the Picture Styles while shooting. According to the manual, landscape gives you a lot of green and blue. My guess is, if you color grade your Cinestyle shot with some green and blue added, you get a pretty “Landscape Picture Style” like look.

@DavidLarsenM1 the thing is we do need the opening for tweaking when editing the video later on. that ‘opening’ isnt anywhere available inside a software after it being shot improperly.
I’m just learning to use the video mode with my 550D, and I was thinking… This is just in-camera post processing, right? Couldn’t all this be done just as good in video editing software?

Great video! I was curious about this. I still just use my little HV 30 for Cine style, and the T2i for everything else.

just to let you know the sony a55 has all these styles ,dose not over heat as fast ,focuses while doing 1920 video .i think you should check it out
cinestyle style contrast -4 is the best for post color grading if am i right
